Aiming to honour International Coastal Clean-up Day, Hermes Airports and Saint Lazaros Special School co-organised a coastal cleaning event in the vicinity of Larnaka International Airport.
The event was integrated within the environmental initiatives undertaken by Vantage Airport Group, which is one of the shareholders at Hermes Airports.
Apart from the children of Saint Lazaros Special School and Hermes Airports staff, other volunteers from the airport community also participated in the clean-up of the beach, including ground handling services company Swissport and Cyprus Airports F&B. The event was also supported by Kapnos Airport Shuttle, Larnaka Municipality and Hellenic Tzilalis, the company providing services and environment technologies.
Wes Porter, CEO at Hermes Airports, stated: “The feeling of morale satisfaction and delightedness that we get when we have the opportunity to contribute to the efforts for the protection of the environment is truly indescribable. Especially this year that our event is co-organised together with Saint Lazaros Special School; and frankly, this is a great honour for us.”
As a result of the clean-up event, it is estimated that over 25kg of waste was collected. Among the items volunteers removed from the beach included; plastic bags, bottles, tins, cigarette butts as well as a lot of paper litter. Much of the waste collected was sent by Hermes Airports for recycling.
