German actress Ute Lemper to perform for Pafos2017 celebrations
Pafos2017 – the European Capital of Culture, is shedding light on the mythical homeland of Venus, with a performance dedicated to the passion of love and life, starring Ute Lemper, on May 20 at Castle Square.
The event’s programme is set to include Kurt Weill’s music and Bertolt Brecht’s poetry, with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra’s participation, conducted by Yiorgos Kountouris.
Lemper is internationally-known as being among Weill’s foremost interpreters of the German, French and American chapters of his compositions.
A dedicated storyteller and historian, Lemper brings intelligence, intensity and vocal variety to Weill’s songs and takes viewers on a journey through both his painful and glorious times.
Lemper is the muse of famous artists who have created exclusive masterpieces, such as choreographers Maurice Bejart (La Mort Subite) and Pina Bausch (Weill Revue), Andrew Lloyd Webber (Cats), directors Peter Greenaway (Prospero’s Books) and Robert Altman (Pret-a- Porter).
Songs have also been composed exclusively to Lemper by Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Philip Glass and Nick Cave.
Moreover, Lemper has been chosen by renowned conductor Zubin Mehta as the soloist of great classical orchestras in the world’s most celebrated theatre halls, such as La Scala to Piccolo Teatro, Lincoln Centre, Royal Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Berliner Ensemble and Sydney Opera House.
